The cheapest power system to buy is rarely the cheapest to own. For a Nigerian business weighing a generator against solar-plus-storage against a hybrid of both, the honest comparison is not the sticker price — it is the five-year total cost of ownership.
Three ways to keep the lights on
- Generator — low upfront cost, high running cost. You pay in diesel and maintenance, every month, forever.
- Solar-plus-storage — high upfront cost, very low running cost. You pay once and the sun is free.
- Hybrid — solar and storage for the base load, a generator sized only for the rare shortfall. Usually the lowest five-year number.
Where the money actually goes
A generator's true cost is dominated by fuel. At Nigerian diesel prices and typical duty cycles, the tank outspends the machine within the first year or two. Add servicing, oil, and eventual overhaul, and the line on the chart climbs steadily and never flattens.
Solar reverses the shape. The curve starts high — panels, battery, inverter — then goes nearly flat, because sunlight has no invoice. Somewhere in years two to four the two lines cross, and after the crossover the diesel option simply keeps costing more.
Diesel is a subscription you never stop paying. Solar is a purchase that stops asking.
